Content Costs and Community
With the growing costs of running a successful online publication and the current less-than-ideal advertising climate to help subsidize the costs of editorial production, many online publishers have begun to look to "community" for a solution. The member-generated content from an online community can provide an inexpensive source of material for online publishers.

Designing for Online Communities: Practical Lessons for Co-Created Spaces
Verslag van een seminar over online communities. Geef mensen een platform om te communiceren en zorg er voor dat je een betrouwbare partner voor je bezoekers bent. 'When we create these platforms for community, what we do is either link up community in practice, a community's interest. What we can do is facilitate community or make more fluid the interaction between people. But, the community part doesn't exist on the platform. The community part exists as energy between the people who have connected.'

Designing Virtual Communities for Creativity and Learning
Bringing about real change and innovation in any endeavor or organization is really about people. While technology can be a catalyst for much-needed change in our educational system, it can only be really effective if we support, enrich, and leverage the creative work and lifelong learning opportunities of all the people who, together, form a learning community--learners, providers, payers and policy-makers.

Do Web-based forums on vendors' sites cause more problems than they solve?
A friend of mine recently received a free-lance assignment to write about how vendors are using the Web to build a better sense of community among their users, and he asked if I had run into any good examples he could use. Unfortunately for him, after considerable thought all I could produce was a list of companies that no doubt regret having made it easy for their customers to talk to -- and complain to -- one another.

Knowledge Diffusion through
When faced with a global IT infrastructure transition project, Xerox managers decided to launch a knowledge-sharing initiative called the Transition Alliance. When fully functional, the Alliance comprised fifty IT professionals responsible for managing 70,000 desktop workstations, nearly 1,200 servers, and networking hardware on five continents. Storck and Hill observed that community members provided high-quality, validated solutions; handled unstructured problems well; and dealt effectively with new developments in hardware and software.

Lessons from the Anthill
The networks we have built allow us to profitably take a page from the playbook of the ants, getting something we want by pulling together large groups of people, with each taking a small chunk of the responsibility. These “anthill communities” are springing up all over the place, and they are creating a whole new concept of what people are capable of. [Online community report 2002]

Online Communities and Content Management
To succeed, an online community needs to fulfill its members' needs for affiliation and knowledge. Affiliation is the members' desire to belong to something. Knowledge is the members' desire to know something. The web system behind the online community needs to support affiliation and knowledge.

Online Communities: Networks that nurture long-distance relationships and local ties
Sociologist Barry Wellman argues that many new social arrangements are being formed through “glocalization” – the capacity of the Internet to expand users’ social worlds to faraway people and simultaneously to bind them more deeply to the place where they live. This report illustrates how widely “glocalization” is occurring. The Internet helps many people find others who share their interests no matter how distant they are, and it also helps them increase their contact with groups and people they already know and it helps them feel more connected to them. Return On Interaction
If you run an online community, then you probably don't need anyone to convince you of its business value. Forum managers and community staff know that the communities build loyalty, give valuable feedback, and contribute to increased sales. But corporate management wants quantifiable statistics to demonstrate that the community effort is paying its freight. [Informationweek 02/07/2001]

Semantic Community Web Portals
Community web portals serve as portals for the information needs of particular communities on the web. We here discuss how a comprehensive and flexible strategy for building and maintaining a high-value community web portal has been conceived and implemented. The strategy includes collaborative information provisioning by the community members. It is based on an ontology as a semantic backbone for accessing information on the portal, for contributing information, as well as for developing and maintaining the portal. We have also implemented a set of ontology-based tools that have facilitated the construction of our show case - the community web portal of the knowledge acquisition community.

Virtual communities: why and how are they studied
One of the new concepts emerging in relation to this new world, to Cyberspace, is Virtual Communities. It is concept formed to describe some of the new social "life forms" we are starting to see in Cyberspace. Virtual Communities does not cover all these new "life forms" and definitely not all interesting aspects of Cyberspace but it is one of the most interesting phenomena's in Cyberspace and it is the concept we focus on in this paper. Cyberspace attracts a lot of researchers from almost every academic field. It seems as if this new world raises interesting questions to everybody and also puts our old questions in a new perspective. In this paper we will try to describe what kind of research is going on and also discuss why this research is important to the future of our society.

Virtual Connections: Community Bonding on the Net
In the mid-1990s, Howard Rheingold and Sherry Turkle reported on the social interactions of people in chat rooms and on newsgroups. While chat rooms and newsgroups continue to play a role in computer mediate communication, the Web has assumed a prominent place in forging relationships among people with common interests. A series of community-based Web exhibits focusing on ethnic groups in Tucson, Arizona, and the U.S. Southwest, serves as a case study in how the Web is building electronic communities and renewing social capital.
