| Links: Business-centred design: Designing web sites that sell
For a site to meet its strategic objectives, it has to orient and direct its target audience through the process of conversion, whether that conversion is buying a product, subscribing to a newsletter, making a phone call, or exploring related information. To incorporate such objectives, we have to think beyond the boundaries of ease of use. [GUUUI 03/01/2003]

Information architects, it's embarrassing to admit, get excited about things like taxonomies, search engines, site indices, and content maintenance policies. And more than anything, we natter on about how successful sites are the result of planning before implementing, leading us to create site "blueprints" just like real "bricks-and-mortar" architects do.
So you might be surprised to read I am now going to criticize a site for being over-architected. Frankly, I'm surprised too. And this is a site I actually enjoy. But Brint.com, "the Premier Business and Technology Portal and Global Community Network for E-Business, Information, Technology, and Knowledge Management," makes my head spin with too much of a good thing. Whether it’s in your face, or barely noticeable, an
architecture needs to be clear and understandable and it needs to
communicate. Architecture, navigation and interface design combined with
visual branding, determine the overall user experience and influence the
audience’s brand perception. The architecture is the foundation that
supports a site’s navigation and interface design. As the foundation, it
needs to fit the content and communicate the appropriate message. [Designinteract 19/12/2001]

There are seven typical deliverables an IA will produce. Occasionally they will not produce all seven, sometimes the deliverables will include others such as a thesaurus or taxonomy. I've presented them in rough chronological order, though these are a toolset, not a rigid methodology, and the choice of which to use and when to use them will depend on the needs of the project. After a short introduction and a discussion of the concepts verbo-visual communication and design, this paper deals with “design of information sets”. In design of information sets the designer makes certain information available for different groups of people. An information set may be a book, a paper, a poster, a symbol on a signpost, a webpage, and many other information products. In each case the designer may have clear intentions and objectives with the information content. However, it is always up to the interpreter to conceive or misconceive the available information,
to use or not use it, to use or misuse it. [Rune Pettersson, 1999] PDF-file

If you are a web strategist, designer, or content manager, you are undoubtedly familiar with the value of web personalization. For years, we've been working to ease the complexity associated with authoring, delivering, and consuming rich, dynamic content via browser-based applications. Introducing more content, and varying it routinely, may make your site fresh, but it can also have a negative impact on your overall message. When does freshness become noise? And how can personalization cut through the clutter? [Boxes and arrows 12/01/2004]

There are many factors in a quality website. Design, development, creativity, writing, color balance, and organization are all contributors, but careful planning is what makes or breaks the site. The old adage 'It'll come out in the wash' rarely works in practice. Lack of planning usually results in unorganized material and plenty of headaches along the way.

Not only is it difficult to find the right Web site, but it's often hard to find what you're looking for within a site.
