DENIM is an outgrowth of the original SILK project, a pen-based sketching tool for designing user interfaces. SILK combines many of the benefits of paper-based sketching with existing electronic prototyping tools. It allows designers to quickly sketch an interface using an electronic pad and stylus. SILK preserves the important properties of pencil and paper: a rough drawing can be produced quickly and the medium is flexible. However, unlike a paper sketch, this electronic sketch is interactive and can easily be annotated and modified using editing gestures. SILK allows the designer to extend the interactivity of the recognized widgets using storyboards.

Our UML based Guibot tools establish fast, clear, and accurate requirements by implementing the Cockburn Use Case format with automated GUI prototyping and automated Activity Diagram production via our notation, Extended Activity Semantics. When using Extended Activity Semantics, the system "to be" is visualized in the context of the customer workflow, allowing the customer to articulate the information system in their own business language. At the same time, the programmer receives a clear description of the user activity and information requirements.

As we were developing user interfaces for our company's browser-based healthcare information applications, we decided that paper prototyping was both awkward and inadequate for the frequent navigation necessary in the UI. Our users needed to access multiple screens from many areas, and paper mockups would not easily support such rapid movement or test it efficiently. Instead, we needed an on-line prototype without the overhead involved in coding one. Eventually, we found a way to convert our Visio drawings into an on-line prototype and soon had a quick, easy, and effective way for creating more dynamic prototypes from original Visio drawings. The survey confirmed what discussions on mailing lists such as CHI-WEB and SIG-IA have indicated: there is currently no agreement on what is the best type of tool to use for web prototyping. However, there is a majority of 28.3% using a visual or text based HTML tool as their primarily type of prototyping tool, closely followed by 24.5% who prefer a diagramming tool. [GUUUI 07/2002]

Tinderbox does an incredible job as a note-taking, brainstorming, information-gathering tool, working much like your brain does to allow you to capture, link, and organize ideas in a flash. It really shines as an IA tool. It allows you to quickly prototype maps of information, establishing links between ideas (or pages or nodes), sites, or other files. Tinderbox is the perfect replacement for those "sticky note" sessions so many information architects are used to. Just start brainstorming, get all the elements that need to be on your site in one place, view them in one of five different views, arrange, link --and you're ready to go.
