A Pattern Language for Human-Computer Interface Design
The patterns contained in this work address the general problem of how to design a complex interactive software artifact. They are intended to be used by people who design traditional user interfaces, Web sites, on-line documentation, video games, and other such things. Others who may be interested include people who implement such artifacts, or test them for usability, or manage teams who design and implement them. The language does not attempt to address implementation issues, however.

A User-Centered Approach to Designing a New Top-Level Structure for a Large and Diverse Corporate We
In January 1998, Kodak introduced a new top-level structure and visual design for its Web site. This paper describes the user-centered approach utilized in the design process. We discovered that combining the knowledge gained from a variety of data collection methods was critical to understanding and defining Web site user requirements. We also found an on-line preview and survey to be a useful tool for assessing user acceptance of new designs.

Conceptual User Interface: A New Tool for Designing E-Commerce User Interfaces
Customers wanted us to design their highly interactive e-commerce Web sites very quickly. But the Web user interface design tools we were using were too slow. iXL developed a new tool, called a Conceptual User Interface (CUI), that allowed us to quickly and iteratively design interactive Web user interfaces in a shorter period of time. To improve quality and efficiency, we used the CUI with other design steps and tools.

Debunking the myths of UI design
Software development would benefit greatly from extensive study by sociologists, anthropologists, and clinical psychologists. As we await such analyses, let's document some beliefs embedded in the culture of software development, specifically about user interface design. This article identifies a series of cultural myths and presents realistic conclusions from my extensive experience in user interface design. I'll also address current trends in World Wide Web design. Developing Schemas for the Location of Common Web Objects
This study sought to better understand users' schemas concerning the location of common web objects on a typical website by examining novice (less than one year of web experience) and experienced (three or more years of web experience) users. The web objects examined were: 1) grouping of links that internally connect web pages within the same site, 2) grouping of links to web pages that are external to a website, 3) "back to homepage" link, 4) internal search engine, and 5) advertisement banner(s). Dialogical techniques for the design of web sites
In this paper, we present an empirical study of our use of scenario-based design in the evaluation and redesign of a Web site. We practice a revised method of scenario-based design inferred from a theoretical perspective which treats design as inquiry, inquiry as dialogue, and dialogue as the source of all tools; including mental constructs. The result is a set of techniques for using structured dialogue between users and designers to increase designers' understanding of specific domains of users' work.

Functional Spec Tutorial :: What and Why
Functional specifications (functional specs), in the end, are the blueprint for how you want a particular web project or application to look and work. It details what the finished product will do, how a user will interact with it, and what it will look like. By creating a blueprint of the product first, time and productivity are saved during the development stage because the programmers can program instead of also working out the logic of the user-experience. It will also enable you to manage the expectations of your clients or management, as they will know exactly what to expect.

Getting the Right Information for Your Site
Web information is three-dimensional. What we mean by this is that there are three dimensions to explore in the process of defining the information on a Web site. Focusing on these dimensions can help you formulate your Web site. But keeping in mind the specific needs and requirements of the Internet and of the needs the people who populate this medium is the key to putting the right information on that site to fulfill your business goals. How to run a design critique
The challenge is to create the openness needed for good ideas to surface, while simultaneously cultivating the feedback and criticism necessary to resolve open issues. Unlike a brainstorming meeting, where the exclusive goal is to come up with new ideas, a critique meeting is focused on evaluating a set of existing ideas, and possibly identify future directions or changes. Instead of hoping that hallway and email discussions will lead the team in a good direction, it’s generally worth investing time to set up critique meetings to drive the design forward. How Taxonomies Ease Knowledge Retrieval and Facilitate Associative Learning
Taxonomies are an increasingly popular method of organizing information in a digital environment. Adding hand-crafted directories to the search process is one of the most important trends among consumer portals in 2000. Yet debate rages over the implications of deploying hierarchies, taxonomies and other rigid structures of organization.

Listening to the Customer's Voice
Many techniques are used for eliciting user requirements, all of which attempt to include the voice of the customer in the product design process. A typical project might employ a combination of meetings with user representatives and developers, facilitated workshops (for example, joint application design sessions) with analysts and users, individual customer interviews, and user surveys. The use case approach is an especially effective technique for deriving software requirements, analysis models, and test cases. [Software Development 03/1997]

Mary Brodie Outlines the Requirements for Developing Successful Navigations and User Experiences
Sometimes site managers and directors base their architecture on a competitor’s site or on something that they find visually appealing. However, each site, no matter how similar in purpose, has a slightly different end-goal for each user. Using a site as design inspiration can help, but using its navigation strategy will not. Navigation should mirror, or enhance, the customer interaction that exists offline. The final design depends on the company’s strategy for distributing information to particular user groups or, rather, their strategy for customer experience. [Design Interact 02/2002]

Modeling User Workflows for Rich Internet Applications
As Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) become more advanced, the tasks, problems, and processes they address become increasingly complex, making it more important than ever to accurately model user workflows. Early Internet applications were often narrowly focused in scope, and the steps were relatively simple and sequential, for example, purchasing items through simple e-commerce, reserving hotel rooms, or renting cars. But as productivity applications move toward a web-based distribution model, the tasks become more complicated.

Organizing Your Site
When you make the decision to build a Web site, whether epic or modest, you should first stop and answer a few basic questions before jumping in. What is the purpose of this site? What will it contain? Who is the audience? What do you hope to get out of it? What do you hope your visitors will get out of it?

Quick guide: web interface design
Interface design encompasses three distinct, but related constructs--usability, visualization, and functionality (Vertelney, Arent, & Lieberman, 1990). Interface design is most often associated with the development of web pages, computer software, and multimedia, but is relevant to the creation of any instructional media or technical equipment.

Registration Revamp
Now that you have a goal in mind, let's focus on specifics. There are several changes you can make that are guaranteed to increase successful registrations and customer satisfaction. They're easy because they don't affect the data format, the database structure, or the core system design. You can implement them without significant engineering work or political negotiation. Once design and copy writing are complete, a developer can usually put these changes into action within three days. [Webreview 2001]

Task centered user interface design
The central goal of this book is to teach the reader how to design user interfaces that will enable people to learn computer systems quickly and use them effectively, efficiently, and comfortably. The interface issues addressed are primarily cognitive, that is, having to do with mental activities such as perception, memory, learning, and problem solving. Physical ergonomic issues such as keyboard height or display contrast are covered only briefly.

The Psychology of Menu Selection: Designing Cognitive Control at the Human/Computer Interface
Menu selection is emerging as an important mode of human/computer interaction. This book, the first entirely devoted to this important form of human/computer interaction, provides detailed theoretical and empirical information of interest to software designers and human/computer interaction specialists and researchers. A new theoretical approach to menu selection is taken by developing a psychological theory of cognitive control by the user. A comprehensive review of empirical research on menu selection is presented in an organized fashion to aid in the design and evaluation of systems. Finally, information is given on how to protype and evaluate menu selection systems using both performance data and user ratings.

Understanding Your Web Audience
Although there are lots of elements to consider when designing compelling Web experiences (writing style, look and feel, information organization -to name just a few), there is one "knowable" element that can be used to appraise the rest: audience. A detailed understanding of your target audience provides you with an effective metric by which to evaluate all your design decisions: structure (content and organization), visual presentation (personality and tone), and interaction (functionality and behavior). From cultural dimensions to computer expertise, the more you know about your audience the easier it becomes to design for (and communicate to) them. [Creative behaviour 11/2002]

Web Page Design: Implications of Memory, Structure and Scent for Information Retrieval
Much is known about depth and breadth tradeoff issues in graphical user interface menu design. We describe an experiment to see if large breadth and decreased depth is preferable, both subjectively and via performance data, while attempting to design for optimal scent throughout different structures of a website. A study is reported which modified previous procedures for investigating depth/breadth tradeoffs in content design for the web. Results showed that, while increased depth did harm search performance on the web, a medium condition of depth and breadth outperformed the broadest, shallow web structure overall.

Website Structural Navigation
The 'structural navigation bar' is becoming a ubiquitous element on many websites. It not only shows users where they are currently located in the site's architecture, but it allows them to back up levels—one at a time. To find the University of Florida in the example above, a person could just click on "Universities" and then find Florida instead of having to go to the site's homepage. In theory, this is an ideal form of navigation for large sites, but are they really useful? Do people utilize them, or just go straight to the homepage or search engine. This experiment tests whether this type of navigational reference is truly valuable. [Noah Lazar, Michael Eisenbrey, University of Maryland, 2000]
