Traditional usability methods are expensive, time consuming, and many require professional usability engineers. The environment in which web sites are designed cannot easily support these constraints. Our approach assumes that evaluation of web sites must be rapid, remote, and as automated as possible. In this paper, we'll discuss three software tools and two techniques that we have developed to facilitate quick evaluation. These tools and techniques can be found at http://zing.ncsl.nist.gov/~webmet/. We'll also describe supporting case studies and our plans for future tools and techniques.

A Web browser designed specifically for usability professionals who are testing websites. It allows test facilitators to record usage information in an easily viewed and manipulated format (a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet). It records the amount of time spent at each page, a complete keystroke record, and the number of mouse clicks made by the participant both on and off scrollbars. Navigation clicks on ergoBrowser buttons are also recorded with the name of the button clicked.
From a test participant's perspective, ergoBrowser offers basic browser functionality, including the familiar Back and Forward buttons.
