Developing Usability Tools and Techniques for Designing and Testing Web Sites
Traditional usability methods are expensive, time consuming, and many require professional usability engineers. The environment in which web sites are designed cannot easily support these constraints. Our approach assumes that evaluation of web sites must be rapid, remote, and as automated as possible. In this paper, we'll discuss three software tools and two techniques that we have developed to facilitate quick evaluation. These tools and techniques can be found at http://zing.ncsl.nist.gov/~webmet/. We'll also describe supporting case studies and our plans for future tools and techniques.

In the Web Lab
When you have some of the most demanding users in the world, you sweat the small stuff. Here's how one e-commerce start-up spent $1 million to bullet-proof its Web site before its launch today.

Quantitative Web Page Measures (DRAFT)
We present preliminary findings for an automated approach being developed to enable designers to evaluate the quality of an information-centric Web page based on quantitative measures, such as the number of words, graphics, links, and colors. Our comparison of 428 pages from sites ranked favorably by users or experts and from unranked sites reveal major differences between these groups and illustrate key measures that predict group membership with 63% accuracy.

Testing for usability in the design of a new information gateway
For the past few years, one of the strategic goals of the University of Arizona library has been, “To transform access to information that supports the learning, research and creative activities of the University’s student, faculty, staff, and affiliated customers.” The current system interface was thought to be confusing, fragmented, and containing too many interfaces. This made it difficult to use and left many customers unable to proceed in finding and selecting appropriate information resources. The Access 2000 Team was thus charged: to improve access for customers, develop search mechanisms to accommodate novice and advanced users, incorporate SiteSearch software into the interface, and evaluate and assess the user satisfaction and success with the changes.

Testing Without a Formal Test Plan
For a range of reasons -- both good and bad -- many software and web development projects don't budget enough time for complete and comprehensive testing. A quality test team must be able to test a product or system quickly and constructively in order to provide some value to the project. This essay describes how to test a web site or application in the absence of a detailed test plan and facing short or unreasonable deadlines.

The Culture of Usability: How To Spend Less And Get More From Your Usability-Testing Program
Now that most of us agree that usability testing is an integral investment in site development, it's time to recognize that the standard approach falls short. It is possible to do less work and get better results while spending less money. By bringing usability testing in-house and breaking tests into more manageable sessions, you can vastly improve your online offering without affecting your profit margin. [New Architect 08/2002]

Usability Testing
"Usability doesn't mean that your best friend thinks it's "cool," your designer calls it "cutting-edge," or your VC sees it as "viable." What it means is that you get a group of users to hammer on it, and you watch them hammer. That way, you find out what paths they follow, which graphics they click, where they get lost, and, most importantly, when they lose interest." [Newmedia.com 31/5/2000]

Usability Testing WWW
Although usability engineering has come to play an increasingly important role in conventional software development, it is rarely part of Web site development. Some good Web style guides have begun to appear, which can aid the site designer. The adherence to up-front usability guidelines by itself, however, does not guarantee a usable end product. A distinct evaluation process is required. This workshop shall address that process: usability testing. The goal of the workshop is to promote and facilitate such testing by creating a compendium of methods for evaluating the usability of Web sites, along with some suggested approaches for addressing institutional barriers to usability testing.

User Test Your Web Site
This article is the first in a series that Web Review will publish, by usability consultant Keith Instone, who applies usability engineering practices to the Web. The goal of the series is to raise awareness of usability by considering the users, the tasks they are trying to accomplish, and the context of their usage.

Voodoo Usability
The good news is that usability has been recognized as an important element of Internet success: the average speaker at industry conferences now promotes good user experience in preference to "cool sites." The bad news is that most sites employ horribly misguided methodologies that do not assess real usability. Sometimes the methods are simply worthless; other times they are directly misleading.

Web Design and Cognitive Clinical Interview
With standard usability tests, investigators are usually able to answer "how" performance is executed. For example, investigators record a user's flow of behavior. However, the question of "why" is often left only indirectly answered (e.g. by think aloud approaches) which can lead to faulty interpretations of data. The cognitive clinical interview can be used to attain direct answers to both how and why users perform tasks as they do. Originally implemented to better understand children's mental functioning, the cognitive clinical interview is now seen as a tool for usability engineering. [Internetworking 09/2000]
