| Links: Better Internet Search Engines
In this column, I'll take a look at some of these new search engines and explain how they are making searching a more fruitful endeavor. In future columns I'll return to the more traditional search engines (yes, they still can be very useful for certain types of searches), and look at some of the unique new features they've added. I'll also explain how to fashion your searches to improve your chances of getting the Web sites you want.

This first-ever study describes the nature of the deep Web, and quantifies its size, importance and quality. Major sections deal with study methodology, findings, and implications. The paper has been written according to peer-reviewable standards. The deep Web is qualitatively different from the surface Web. Deep Web sources store their content in searchable databases that only produce results dynamically in response to a direct request. But a direct query is a "one at a time" laborious way to search. Previously, I've written generally about the many new ways in which search engines are trying to earn money from their search results. This month, we'll take a closer look at one particular method, "paid inclusion," which is now in place at Ask Jeeves, LookSmart and Inktomi. [Search Engine Watch 3/11/2000]

More than two-thirds of online retail sites tested last spring by Forrester Research failed to list the most relevant content in the first page of search results. No wonder sites have suffered from an inability to convert browsers into buyers. Customers are literally being driven away by weak search technology. [NYTimes 28/02/2001]

This paper analyzes the impact of using search engines on the user's privacy.
Several privacy related issues were found, such as search engines leaking the query string to advertising companies or sharing user identifiers with other sites. This paper will show the way this is accomplished as well as possible counter-measures to be taken by the user to preserve her privacy. [Marc Roessler 28/04/2001]

The apparent terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 changed the skyscape of New York City, and the political and emotional landscape of the United States. The attack may have also changed how the leading search engine, Google, thinks of itself. This article examines how people used the Internet in general, and Google in particular, to seek and to deliver desperately wanted information about the lives lost and damage inflicted by the attacks. While other search engines use large, expensive multiprocessor computers, FAST queries whiz along a distributed network of search-and-dispatch "nodes," making more-efficient use of existing CPUs. The result: FAST can process a larger number of queries on a smaller number of servers. [Fastcompany 10/2002]

[Emerce 04/10/2001]
